Tony Howarth

With over 25 years PGA experience, Scarthingwell Golf Academy Director Tony Howarth has taught all levels of golfers from beginners to European Tour and Ladies European Tour players. Tony has worked alongside the PGA’s of Europe implementing coaching and development programmes across the world including Europe, Africa and Asia.

Sinclair Award Winner Tony has appeared as guest speaker at many events including the Junior Golf Partnership seminar held at the Belfry, Key Note Speaker at the inaugural Golf Careers Convention at the University of Northumbria, guest speaker at the UK Golf Show and also guest speaker at the Turkish Golf Federation 1st Annual Coaching Conference held in Antalya in December 2011.

Tony has managed the European Tour’s Junior Initiative at many Tour Events and managed the England Golf Partnership’s Activity Area at the Weetabix Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St. Annes.

A strong belief in the integration of golf and education led Tony to create a schools programme that was rolled out nationwide via golf professionals and teachers. He was the first PGA Professional to be appointed Head Professional at an Academic Centre (Myerscough College) in the UK in 1998 and was responsible for introducing cross-curricular activity, using golf as the delivery tool, across Lancashire & Yorkshire.

In 2003, Tony was appointed Golf Development Officer for Merseyside and the following year, 2004, saw his efforts in the development of grass roots golf rewarded by the presentation of the Sinclair Award.

Since 2014, Tony has been coaching at Scarthingwell Golf Course and alongside his regular coaching sessions, Tony oversees his highly successful Academy Development Programmes introducing beginners to the game of golf via his innovative structure.

Saturday was my last of six lessons I had booked with Tony, what an instructor he is. I have had lessons from other professionals in the past and Tony beats them all hands down. He has totally re-modelled my swing and in doing so has instilled confidence and each lesson has been a joy to attend. His teaching methods are current with the use of video which he then sends over to me after each lesson so I have something to refer back to and he teaches in such a way that it is easy to learn. His communication skills are superb and I would have no hesitation in referring Tony to anyone that wants to improve their game. Indeed we have already worked out a further strategy where I will keep visiting Tony periodically to ensure I haven’t fallen into any bad habits and we are going to resume a few lessons in March on other aspects of my game such as short game, bunker play etc.
